Meet the New Co-Chairs - Cheryl Lassitter and Victoria Siegel

Cheryl Lassitter is Lead Chemist of the National Seafood Inspection Laboratory (NSIL) with NOAA Fisheries in Pascagoula, MS.  She has a M.S. in Environmental Chemistry with two years of Ph.D. work (unfinished) in Remote Sensing and Physics.   Her primary responsibilities are oversight and project management of NSIL's Chemistry Team activities.  Current Projects include the Species ID Project for the prevention of economic fraud, the Veterinary Drugs in Aqua cultured Seafood Project, the Mercury/Selenium Project, the Heavy Metals Contaminants in Seafood Project, and oversight of NOAA's Seafood Inspection Program analyses and reporting. She also serves on two sub-committees of the National Seafood Sanitation Program (NSSP) as well as serving as an ERP representative and committee co-chair with AOAC. 

Victoria Siegel is the Pesticides Department Manager at Eurofins CAL, located in New Orleans, LA, the contaminants testing center for Eurofins Food in North America.  She has a Ph.D. in biochemistry and more than 20 years of experience in analytical chemistry.  Her work experience includes management of testing activities in state regulatory laboratories and commercial testing laboratories and has also worked with pesticide formulations, environmental samples, animal feed, fertilizer and foods.  She is a former manager of the AAFCO Check Sample Program and a past member of the AOAC Official Methods Board.

The Community seeks members internationally including global representatives from governments, academia, producers, processors, distributors, importers and exporters, working together to develop analytical standards of excellence in their areas of expertise. The Community will serve as a primary resource for timely knowledge exchange, networking and high quality laboratory information for all stakeholders.

The Community will work with other professional organizations to champion the best methods for single laboratory, inter-laboratory or collaborative study.

Professionals involved in the production, distribution or analysis of foods may join the Community by contacting the Chair. Most communications within the Community do not require in-person meetings. Electronic (conference calls and internet) communications are more efficient and address most concerns in time commitment, travel funding restrictions, and international time zone limitations. Electronic mail is also used but the creation of new subgroups and growth of the Community (and email inbox overload) demands the online forum approach.
Face-to-face meetings and conference calls are also held in conjunction with other professional meetings (regional and national) as well as appropriate scientific and trade association meetings.

Once community members have identified specific method needs and significant support for method development and validation, a committee of experts will be established to develop and validate the most appropriate method/s. Interlaboratory studies may involve the analysis of pesticides, metals, radioactivity, antibiotics, animal drugs, and other chemical contaminants. Those methods demonstrating sufficient accuracy, precision, and selectivity will be recommended for publication and/or collaborative study.

Subgroup Chairs are chosen by their subgroups and approved by the Chairs. The current Subgroup Chairs will prepare the agenda and program for their individual meetings this year. New Subgroup Chairs may be chosen during the Annual Meeting based on the needs of the particular subgroup.

Voting Members are recommended to the Chairs by the Subgroup Chairs. The Chairs choose a group of Voting Members who will represent the various stakeholder groups within the Community.  As an example, if the subgroup chairs represent U.S. government agencies, the voting members might be chosen because they represent different counties or industry. For that reason, not all recommendations will necessarily be approved by the Chairs because there needs to be a balance of representation. Subgroup Chairs and Voting Members review recommendations brought to the Community by the Subgroups or other Stakeholder groups and vote for Community approval.  Requests to establish another subgroup, proposals to collaborate methods or submissions of validation protocols for publication might be submitted for approval by the Community. These submissions will be announced on the Community website and will be made available for review to any interested members of the Community. We do not currently have any submissions for Community approval but there are several methods being considered for collaboration by Community members at this time. If Community members have any concerns about proposals brought before the Community, they should discuss their concerns with these representatives.
